Robin, aujourd'hui, vous avez dit que vous avez perdu contre le meilleur joueur de tous les temps. Au début du match, qu'est-ce qui était différent par rapport à plus tard dans le match?

En fait, je pense que ce match était ce à quoi je m'attendais. J'ai joué contre Roger tellement de fois, et je connais son jeu maintenant. Je n'ai pas été assez agressif. En fait, à chaque fois que j'ai joué contre Roger, après chaque match, je me suis dit: «J'ai tellement mal joué aujourd'hui!» Mais maintenant, j'ai compris: ce n'est pas parce que je joue mal, mais c'est parce que lui me fait jouer mal. C'est ce qui se passe. C'est ça qui est difficile quand on joue contre lui.

Pouvez-vous parler des aspects positifs pour toi dans ce tournoi?

Cela a été un grand tournoi pour moi, les deux meilleures semaines de ma carrière pour l'instant. J'ai battu certains très bons joueurs. Je savais qu'avant de jouer ici, si j'étais au meilleur de ma forme, je pouvais battre tout le monde, qui que ce soit. Pendant le tournoi, je l'ai montré, je peux le faire.

Seriez-vous déçu si vous n'aviez pas de bons résultats à Wimbledon, le prochain Grand Chelem?
Oui, je suis toujours déçu si je perds rapidement dans un tournoi, si je ne joue pas bien. Mais je sais également que, dans un Grand Chelem, tous les matchs sont difficiles. Il faut jouer très bien à partir de la première balle, jusqu'au dernier point. Mais une fois de plus, je sais que je peux battre tous les autres joueurs, mais je peux également perdre contre beaucoup de joueurs, si je ne joue pas mon meilleur tennis.

Robin, s'il n'y a qu'une chose à retenir de ce tournoi, qu'est-ce serait?

Il y a tellement de choses, tellement de souvenirs, mais bien sûr, battre Nadal! C'était super pour moi. Je crois que j'ai réussi à faire l'impossible, le battre au meilleur des 5 sets, sur de la terre battue, personne d'autre ne l'avait fait avant. Moi, j'ai réussi, enfin!

Robin Soderling n'a pas perdu son temps à Roland Garros. Auteur d'un parcours remarquable, malheureusement pour lui terminé par une défaite contre Roger Federer ce dimanche en finale, le Suédois va profiter de ses performances Porte d'Auteuil pour faire un bond au classement ATP et passer, dès lundi matin, de la 25e à la 12e place mondiale.

Federer claimed a 6-1, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 triumph over Soderling to clinch the only major which had eluded him in a glittering career.

The Swede, who beat Rafael Nadal and Nikolay Davydenko en route to the final, said: "I had the two best weeks of my career. Roger is a really worthy winner.

"To me he is the best player in history so he really deserves to win here at the French as well."

When asked whether the second-set tie-break had been the turning point, he replied: "It's tough to say but he played better than me.

"I had a few chances but he came up with some extremely good shots at important moments.

"I'm still happy. I had a great tournament. Roger was too good for me."

Addressing Federer at the presentation ceremony, Soderling added: "You really gave me a lesson on how to play tennis today.

"For me you're the greatest player in history so you really deserved to win this title."

Federer said: "The victory was a huge pressure for me today.

"It's one of the best days of my life. Tennis is just my life."

Två svenskar i Grand Slam-final! Vilken fantastisk dag för svensk tennis vi har att se fram emot. Robin Söderling skall försöka hindra Roger Federer från att bli odödlig. Och Daniel Berta spelar final i pojksingelturneringen i Paris. Plötsligt känns det som en Déjà vu från 80-talet. Alla pratar tennis.
Robin Söderling har svåraste möjligaste uppgift framför sig. Världens främste tennisspelare, kanske någonsin, står på andra sidan nätet och snacket om att schweizaren skule känna av trycket tror jag inte mycket på. Karl´n har spelat 20 Grand Slam-turneringar i rad och gått minst till semifinal i samtliga! På söndagen har ahn en gyllene chans att vinna sin 14:e GS-titel och därmed tangera Pete Sampras notering. Dessutom skulle han bli sjätte man någonsin att vinna alla fyra stora turneringar under karriären. Jag tror att han kommer sälja sig oerhört dyrt och göra livet obehagligt för Robin på söndagseftermiddagen.

Söderlings form är sagolik. Hans vändning mot Gonzalez spektakulär och hans turnering suverän. Oavsett vad som händer härnäst. 0-9 i inbördes möten skrämmer och sättet Federer har spelat mot Robin ger mig anledning att baissa svenskens chanser. Visst, han besegrade Nadal, och har även slagit fler bra spelare på vägen. Men ingen har Federers kompletta slagarsenal och hans stoppbollar och tempoväxlingar kan få Robin ur sin zon.

Svenskens resultat är dock oerhört imponerande. Han har nu vunnit nio matcher i rad på grus (WTC inkluderat). Tidigare har han aldrig varit förbi tredje rundan i en GS, och han har aldrig spelat en ATP-final utomhus! Och tänk om det blir en repris på 1981? Då vann Björn Borg herrsingeln och Mats Wilander pojksingeln!

Daniel Berta är näste svensk i final. Catella-spelaren från helsingborg kom till Paris med lite tveksam form från genrepen och hade lite osäkerhet då han fallit tidigt i uppvärmningsturneringarna. Men väl inne i Paristurneringen har det blivit bättre och bättre. I finalen väntar fransmannen Mina som besegrade Patrik Brydolf i tre set tidigare i turneringen. Den svenska lagledningen har alltså kontroll på motståndet.

Jag säger redan nu tack för underhållningen och "break a leg"

Soderling comme en 2004



Robin Soderling, déjà vainqueur en 2004, s'est imposé en finale à Lyon, dimanche. Le Suédois a battu le Français Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. C'est le troisième titre de sa carrière, le premier d'une saison où il avait échoué en finale à Rotterdam, Memphis et Stockholm.

Gilles Simon, qui avait tenu trois sets face à Robin Sodering la veille en demi-finale, l'avait qualifié de "l'un des tout meilleurs joueurs du monde en salle". Julien Benneteau, malgré l'appui du public et une fin de deuxième set euphorique, n'a pas été en mesure de perturber un joueur pourtant réputé pour ses crises de nerfs. Serein, le Suédois a cogné aussi fort que possible au service et en coup droit pour déborder le Français.

La dernière confrontation entre les deux joueurs datait du Masters de Cincinnati, où Soderling, 24 ans et classé 27e à l'ATP, s'était sèchement imposé 6-0, 6-3. Dans la continuité de ce résultat, le break était fait par Soderling dès le sixième jeu du premier set, sur une tentative à la volée du Bressan qui envoyait sa balle dehors. Le Suédois menait alors 4-2 et le palais des Sports de Gerland, plein à craquer, frémissait pour son protégé. Benneteau tentait bien, dans le jeu suivant, de déborder son adversaire mais celui-ci remportait aisément son service (5-2). Soderling, tout en facilité, se payait même le luxe d'un jeu blanc pour remporter la première manche, durant lequel il flirtait avec les lignes, assénait des coups droits canons et balançait un ace à 220 km/h (6-3).

Soderling n'a pas craqué, Benneteau les fait pleurer

A 3-2 dans la deuxième manche pour Benneteau, Soderling alignait un énième jeu blanc pour égaliser. Puis, avec une réussite insolente, une seule balle de break suffisait au Suédois pour prendre le service du Bressan (4-3). Mais Benneteau réagissait et contrait pour s'offrir une balle de break, puis une deuxième et enfin une troisième, qui était la bonne (4-4). Le Français soulevait alors un poing rageur.

La révolte était sonnée et Gerland s'enflammait. Le Bressan enchaînait par un jeu blanc, ce qui lançait une "ola" enthousiaste dans les gradins, avant de remporter finalement le set au tie-break (7/5). La dernière manche commençait très mal puisque Soderling faisait le break d'entrée sur un moment crucial du match, un smash joué au milieu du court par le Français et qui s'est achevé dans le filet. Cela a été fatal. Le Tricolore a perdu deux fois son service pour une fin de match sans suspense. Restait l'émotion offerte par Benneteau tout au long de la semaine et lors de la remise des trophées. Il remercia ses proches et le directeur du tournoi et quelques larmes coulèrent de part et d'autre. Julien Benneteau a terminé sa saison, puisqu'il n'a pas obtenu de wild-card pour Paris-Bercy, sur une note belle et mélancolique.

LES DECLARATIONS

Julien Benneteau (FRA): "Cette journée était un peu spéciale, avec beaucoup d'émotions et il a fallu que je fasse avec. Forcément, je suis déçu mais Soderling était trop solide. Au premier set, j'ai dû faire le dos rond sur ses services. Il est dur à manoeuvrer, ses frappes sont longues et profondes. Il varie beaucoup son jeu et a un très bon pourcentage de réussite sur ses premières balles (74%). C'est quand même un sacré client, qui fait quatre finales cette année en indoor. Il faut toujours être sur le qui-vive avec lui car la moindre erreur peut coûter cher. Je suis revenu à un set partout au prix de beaucoup d'efforts. Au troisième, il jouait vraiment bien, ses retours fusaient et c'était dur."

"J'ai joué à un très bon niveau pendant les cinq matches de la semaine et franchement, si on m'avait dit il y a huit jours que Gerland ferait la 'ola' pour moi au deuxième set, j'aurais signé tout de suite. Je suis fier de m'être battu jusqu'au bout, d'avoir tout donné devant ma famille et ce public formidable. C'est vraiment dommage car cette journée avait tout pour être parfaite avec un OM-PSG ce soir..."

Robin Soderling (SUE/N.7): "C'est ici que j'ai remporté mon premier tournoi donc c'est une victoire spéciale pour moi. Je rêvais de rentrer dans le Top 20 et à présent, c'est fait, donc c'est une grosse étape de franchie pour moi. Je voulais vraiment gagner ce match et j'ai donc évité de penser aux trois autres finales auxquelles j'ai participé cette saison et que j'ai perdues. Je pense avoir bien joué. Depuis ma première victoire ici en 2004, j'ai progressé dans ma défense, je bouge mieux et je suis plus constant. Mon tennis est meilleur. A Bercy, j'espère bien jouer".

David Nalbandian, tête de série n°1 à Stockholm, a confirmé son statut de favori en finale ce dimanche. L'Argentin a battu le Suédois Robin Soderling en trois sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-3) et succède à Ivo Karlovic, vainqueur en 2007. C'est le deuxième titre de la saison pour Nalbandian après celui de Buenos Aires et le neuvième de sa carrière.

Nalbandian stops Soderling for Stockholm tennis victory

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - David Nalbandian will carry the winning habit to this week's Madrid Masters title defence after claiming the Stockholm Open trophy 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 over Robin Soderling on Sunday.



The Argentine number 7, playing for the first time at the event, held off a fightback from Robin Soderling, who had been seeking to give home fans their first local champion since Thomas Johansson in 2004.

Nalbandian has started his autumn indoor season on the best possible note, which he believes bodes well for Madrid after the confidence-boosting victory.

A year ago, Nalbandian dominated the autumn European campaign, winning Madrid and Paris Bercy back-to-back with two victories each over Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

"I'm going with confidence, I've won my first indoor event of the season, so it's a great start for me," said the Argentine whose only other trophy in 2008 came on clay in Buenos Aires in February.

"I hope to defend my trophy. Madrid has some altitude, maybe 5-600 metres.

"But I'll have a few days to get used to it. There is no extra pressure on me, I'll just try and play my game 100 percent when I'm on the court."

Nalbandian fired 13 aces and broke five times in the Swedish final while Soderling put in 18 untouchable serves.

Nalbandian is thick in the race for the season-ending, eight-man Masters Cup in Shanghai in less than a month.

But the 26-year-old is unlikely to make the trip to China, with his focus on the key Davis Cup final against Spain at Mar del Plata in his homeland.

Nalbandian ran away with the opening set in just over 20 minutes,breaking his 35th-ranked opponent twice.

But after getting up an early break in the second, Soderling clawed it back for 4-all, securing the set with a break of the Argentine in the final game.

The third ran with serve until Nalbandian took a 4-3 lead after Soderling had salvaged three break points. Nalbandian then polished off victory in 1hour 37min on his first match point.

Soderling was playing at the Kungligahallen for the sixth time and now stands 13-6 at the tournament. Nalbandian stands 34-13 for the season.

Soderling had come to the court without once dropping serve all week, winning 37 straight service games.

Soderling Leads Swedes to Fourth Title



Sweden clinched its fourth title at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship, defeating Russia 2-1 on Saturday at the Rochusclub in Düsseldorf as Robin Soderling became just the third player in the 31-year tournament history to win all four singles and four doubles matches during the same week.

Sweden joins Germany, Spain and the United States as title leaders at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship. Sweden also titled in 1988 (d. USA 2-1), 1991 (d. Yugoslavia 2-1) and 1995 (d. Croatia 2-1), and finished as runner-up in 1986 (l. to France) and 1999 (l. to Australia).

Robert Lindstedt and Soderling clinched the Championship tie for Sweden, coming back from down a set and a break in the decisive doubles match to defeat Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny, 4-6, 7-6(5), 11-9. They saved one Championship point at 8-9 in the Match Tie-break with a backhand winner by Lindstedt, and then converted on their first Championship point when Tursunov's return sailed long.

"It's great, absolutely great," said Lindstedt. "I mean I'm at a loss for words. I had a smash at 7:6 that I should have bounced, but I hit in on the fly and I framed it. I had a huge huge brain cramp I guess. Then to come back after that big mistake, match point down and to win it again, it's an unbelievable way to finish it, but a great effort from all of us the whole week."

Soderling gave Sweden the early lead in the first singles match by defeating World No. 16 Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-1 in 63 minutes. He went 4 for 4 on his break point chances, first breaking Youzhny to go up 4-2 in the first set then securing the victory by winning the final six games.

Thomas Johansson picked up where his compatriot left off, converting on his first two break point chances of the reverse singles match against Igor Andreev to roll out to a 4-0 lead. The Russian recovered a break of serve in the sixth game, but Johansson broke right back and then closed out the set. Andreev broke the Swede to go up 3-1 in the second set and again in the first game of the third set en route to the 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win, leveling the tie at 1-all.

Soderling, who made his tournament debut last year, is the third player behind American John McEnroe in 1984 and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez in 2003 to play and win all singles and doubles matches in the same year. He defeated Argentine Guillermo Canas, Czech Tomas Berdych and American James Blake in Round Robin play.

In doubles, Soderling and Lindstedt collected the bonus prize money of ¤11,000 each for winning the most doubles matches this week, plus a shared ¤10,000 for winning the final doubles match.

"It's a great week to peak," said Soderling. "It gives me a lot of confidence for next week in Paris. Hopefully I can continue to play well and hopefully I can win a couple of matches in Paris."

Sweden was the eighth-seeded team this week in its 27th event appearance, but emerged as the only undefeated team in Round Robin play with victories over defending champion Argentina (2-1), the Czech Republic (3-0) and the United States (3-0) in the Red Group.

Russia was making its 11th appearance at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship, but its first since the 2002 final (l. to Argentina). Russia also finished as runner-up in 2000 (l. to Slovakia) and 2001 (l. to Australia).

Youzhny said: "It was a very close match. We are upset for having lost in the final once again. But I'm sure we will back maybe next year to finally win the ARAG World Team Cup. The crowd was great all week long and we just have to thank the organizers to put such a nice event for the players."

Russia finished atop the Blue Group standings with wins over Italy (2-1) and Germany (3-0) in Blue Group action, and received help as Italy came back to defeat Spain on Friday.

Soderling Gets Past Roddick

Memphis, TN -Swede Robin Soderling fired 16 aces and put on a flawless display in defeating top seed Andy Roddick 7-6(6), 6-3, on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

Soderling improved to 9-2 on the season by reaching the semifinals for the second straight week. Last week in Rotterdam he lost in the final in a third set tie-break to Frenchman Michael Llodra.

"We both served well and it was fun to play against him," said Soderling of his first-time meeting with Roddick. "This is probably my favorite court on tour. I am serving great and I have no complaints at all."

"He played well and I thought if I would have gotten through that match, I've had a good chance of going the whole way," said Roddick, who never had break point on the Swede's serve. "I certainly think he's going to go all the way."

In the first set, both players held serve, forcing a tie-break. Roddick had a set point at 6-5 but Soderling hit a service winner and fired an ace, giving him a 7-6 lead. On the next point, Roddick hit a forehand that clicked the top of the net and went wide. In the second set, Soderling went up a break at 4-3 when Roddick double-faulted. He then held for 5-3 and broke Roddick a second time to secure the victory.

Soderling has only faced two break points in 25 service games this week. "I think I am playing better and better with every match," said the 23-year-old Swede.

He will next face No. 4 seed Radek Stepanek, who only lost nine points in 10 service games in a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over Aussie left-hander Chris Guccione. Stepanek is coming off a runner-up last Sunday in San Jose.

Stepanek converted two of seven break points with both breaks coming in the second set (at 2-0 and 4-0) while never facing a break point in the one hour and nine minute match. Guccione only won 42% of second serve points while Stepanek more than doubled that mark at 86%.

Soderling, Darcis in Final

Memphis, TN -- No. 8 seed Robin Soderling maintained his perfect serving record as he advanced to Sunday's final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships with a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory over No. 4 seed Radek Stepanek.

The 23-year-old Swede has yet to drop serve in 35 service games this week (saving four break points) and he will meet Belgian Steve Darcis in the championship. The winner will receive $163,750 and the runner-up $81,000.

"I feel very good and I love to play here," said Soderling," who will attempt to win his third career ATP title in his seventh final. "The center court suits my game and I played some really good matches here two years ago when I reached the final."

Soderling, who reached the final in Rotterdam last week, hit nine of his 12 serves in the opening set, including three in the tie-break. He also saved one break point at 5-5 in the opening set with an ace. He jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the tie-break and never looked back.

In the second set, Stepanek was broken in the fifth game, double-faulting twice, and then he lost serve serve in the ninth game.

"He was serving big and I had a chance in the first set but then the tie-break went quickly," said Stepanek, who is 1-3 lifetime against the Swede. "I'm disappointed with the loss but I played some good tennis with back-to-back finals and semifinals the last two weeks."

Soderling will attempt to become the fifth different Swede to capture the Memphis title (since 1976), joining Joachim Johansson (2004), Magnus Larsson (2000), Stefan Edberg (1985, '87) and Bjorn Borg (1977).

Darcis suprises Soderling

Memphis, TN -- Unseeded Steve Darcis claimed his second career ATP title Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory in one hour and 15 minutes over No. 8 seed Robin Soderling in the final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

The 23-year-old Belgian captured his first ATP title in Amersfoot, the Netherlands on clay in July 2007 where, as a qualifier, he became the lowest ranked (No. 297) titlist of the season.

Coming into this week, Darcis was just 2-5 on the season, his best showing being a second round appearance in Sydney in January. He lost in the first round in his other three ATP main draws and in Belgium's Davis Cup tie with the Czech Republic.

Darcis almost didn't get out of the first round when Vincent Spadea served for the match at 5-4 in the third set but he managed to win in a tie-break. He only dropped two sets during the tournament.

The No. 81st-ranked Darcis will crack the Top 50 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time, climbing to around No. 45. He earned a career-high $163,750.

"It's tough for me to speak right now," said Darcis. "I just finished one hour ago. I feel great. It's the second victory for me in two finals. It's unbelievable. I don't know how to explain it. It was a great feeling when I saw the ball going out because I knew the match wasn't finished. He was playing great. He was serving really good. It was hard for me to win my service games sometimes, I'm really happy about the end. Just like I could say "ooof" It was a great moment."

"I don't realize what I did today. Maybe if you ask me the same question tomorrow, I might answer better. It's just amazing the way I feel right now. Really tough for me to explain."

Soderling, who reached the final last week in Rotterdam, was bidding to become the first Swede to capture an ATP title in the last two-plus seasons since Oct. 2, 2005 when Jonas Bjorkman captured the crown in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (d. Stepanek). He was appearing in his seventh career ATP final (2-5); all coming indoors. It was also his second runner-up effort in Memphis. Two years ago he lost to Tommy Haas in the final. His last ATP title came in Milan three years ago (d. Stepanek).

"He played really well," said Soderling. "He didn't miss much on his serve, much better than I expected him to do. It's a shame that I played my worst match in the final two weeks in a row now. I think I played some really good tennis this week. I didn't play bad today either, but I played a lot better in my other matches. Maybe he made me play bad. He played really good."

Soderling, who did not drop serve coming into the final (held 35 games), was broken the only time in the fourth game of the opening set. Darcis did not drop a point in his next three service games to capture the set in 27 minutes. In the second set, both players held serve, forcing a tie-break, which Soderling led most of the way. He went up 5-3 but then lost the next four points as Soderling hit a forehand long.

Soderling was playing in only his third tournament of the season since missing the final three months of last year with a left wrist injury. On his comeback in Marseille, he reached the quarterfinals (l. to Ancic) before going on to reach the Rotterdam final. His match record is 10-3 on the season.

Le favori a vaincu Gilles Muller, issu des qualifications, en des manches de 6-4, 7-6 (4). Roddick, qui a remporté la finale du tournoi de San Jose dimanche dernier, aura comme prochain adversaire Mardy Fish, celui-là même qu'il a battu en quarts de finale à San Jose.

Dans un autre match de premier tour, Frédéric Niemeyer, de Deauville, a subi l'éliminations aux mains du Suédois Robin Soderling, classé huitième. Niemeyer, lui aussi issu des qualifications, s'est incliné 6-2, 6-1.

Du très bon Roddick
Andy Roddick a poursuivi son irrésistible tournée américaine avec une superbe démonstration au deuxième tour du tournoi de Memphis. Comme à San José il y a une semaine, «A-Rod» s'est débarrassé d'un Mardy Fish toujours coriace sur dur. Sauf que cette fois, ce n'est pas en trois sets accrochés (7/6 1/6 7/5) que le sixième joueur mondial a expédié son adversaire, mais en deux manches et 61 minutes de jeu seulement. 14 aces, 77% de première balle, Roddick était quasiment injouable pour Fish qui s'est quand même procuré deux balles de break. Le vainqueur de l'US Open 2003 qui s'est dit en «excellente forme physique» malgré son marathon, affrontera Robin Soderling qui a rayé de la carte Victor Hanescu en deux manches (6/2 6/1) dans un prometteur duel de canonniers.

Söderling se paie Roddick !

Finaliste le week-end dernier à Rotterdam, face à Michaël Llodra, Robin Söderling continue de briller sur les courts. Vendredi, le Suédois s'est offert le scalp d'Andy Roddick en quart de finale du tournoi de Memphis. Face à la tête de série numéro 1 du tableau, Söderling, qui affrontera Radek Stepanek en demie, s'est imposé en deux manches (7-6, 6-3).

ATP - Memphis - Robin Soderling rejoint Steve Darcis en finale

Le Suédois Robin Soderling s'est qualifié pour la finale du tournoi de tennis de Memphis en battant samedi le Tchèque Radek Stepanek, tête de série N.4, en deux manches 7-6 (7/2), 6-3.

En finale, Soderling (N.8), vainqueur de l'Américain Andy Roddick en quarts de finale, affrontera le Belge Steve Darcis.

Darcis, 81e mondial, avait battu le Suédois Jonas Bjorkman en trois manches 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 plus tôt dans la journée.

Darcis crée la surprise

Le Belge Steve Darcis a créé une énorme surprise en remportant le deuxième tournoi ATP de sa carrière dimanche à Memphis, battant en finale le Suédois Robin Soderling, tête de série N.8, en deux manches 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).

Le jeune Liégeois de 23 ans est sans doute le joueur le plus efficace de l'histoire de l'ATP: il n'a gagné que 13 matches dans sa carrière -contre 9 défaites- mais il compte déjà deux titres.

Darcis, 81e joueur mondial, s'était fait remarquer l'an passé lors du tournoi d'Amersfoort en raflant le titre alors qu'il n'avait jamais remporté le moindre match sur le circuit ATP. Depuis, il était retombé dans l'anonymat en gagnant seulement trois matches, dont deux cette année.

Il n'était donc pas parmi les favoris en début de semaine dans la salle du Tennessee. Mais le droitier belge, notamment vainqueur de l'Autrichien Jurgen Melzer (N.7) au 2e tour, a parfaitement tiré profit d'une moitié de tableau plutôt dégagée, avec le forfait de dernière minute de l'Américain James Blake et la défaite surprise du tenant du titre, l'Allemand Tommy Haas, au 2e tour.

En finale, il s'est montré opportuniste et efficace pour se défaire en 1h15 de Soderling.



Bis repetita pour Soderling



La rencontre a été un long duel de serveurs. Le premier à craquer a été Soderling qui a concédé sa mise en jeu -pour la première fois de la semaine- en milieu de première manche. En 30 minutes, Darcis, qui a sauvé une seule balle de break, a empoché le set initial.

Sans se relâcher, le Belge, malgré sa taille moyenne (1,77 m), a continué à «tenir» son service en n'offrant aucune occasion à son adversaire d'obtenir une balle de break.

En face, Soderling, aidé par 14 aces, a lui aussi tenu bon, et les deux hommes se sont donnés rendez-vous au jeu décisif, conclu au 12e point par Darcis.

De son côté, Soderling, 23 ans et 42e mondial, vit sa seconde désillusion lors d'une finale en huit jours. La semaine dernière à Rotterdam, le grand Scandinave (1,90 m) avait été battu pour le titre par le Français Michaël Llodra.

Soderling, finaliste à Memphis en 2006, était en quête du troisième titre de sa carrière après deux titres (Lyon en 2004 et Milan en 2005).

Söderling i semi - slog Roddick

Robin Söderlings comeback efter skada har varit imponerande.

Söderling vann med setsiffrorna 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 mot den förre världsettan och numera sjätterankade amerikanen.

- Vi servade båda bra och det var kul att spela mot honom. Det här är förmodligen min favoritbana på tennistouren. Jag servade bra och har inget att klaga över, sade Söderling till turneringens hemsida.

Svensken gjorde 16 serveess i matchen, ett mer än Roddick, och just ett serveess räddade honom när amerikanen hade setboll i första sets tiebreak. I andra set kunde sedan Söderling dra nytta av att amerikanen gjorde ett dubbelfel, vilket gav break fram till 4-3-ledning och slutlig seger. Roddick var storfavorit att ta hem ATP-turneringen i Memphis som nu har blivit en rejäl svenskframgång med även Jonas Björkman i semifinal.

- Han spelade riktigt bra. Jag tror att han kommer att gå hela vägen, sade Roddick om Söderlings chanser i semifinalen.

I kvällens semifinal möter Söderling tjecken Radek Stepanek, tidigare topp 10-spelare men nu rankad 31:a i världen. Skulle Söderling vinna kan det bli en helsvensk final i morgon. I den andra semifinalen ställs Jonas Björkman mot överraskningen Steve Darcis, Belgien.

Robin Söderling i ny ATP-final

Robin Söderling följde upp segern mot Andy Roddick med seger över Radek Stepanek i Memphis ATP och på söndagen spelar han sin andra raka ATP-final. Motståndare blir belgaren Steve Darcis som slog ut Jonas Björkman i den andra semifinalen. Söderling har nu chansen att ta sin tredje titel i karriären och i så fall Sveriges 266:e under den öppna eran.
Söderling gör sin tredje ATP-turnering för i år efter handledsskadan som hållit honom borta från turneringsspel sedan i juli ifjol. I semifinalen fick formstarke Stepanek ge sig i två raka set.


Jonas Björkman ser också ut att ha hittat formen. Efter träningsveckan med Davis Cup-laget och singelmatcherna där har han i Memphis hittat tillbaks i god gammal form.

- Spelade bra idag också men tyvärr så spelade han ett snäpp bättre. Nu hoppas jag Robin tar hem det, säger Jonas Björkman som hade 1-0 i set mot Darcis i sin semifinal.


Söderling har aldrig mött Darcis på ATP-touren och vinner han blir det Sveriges första ATP-singeltitel sedan Thomas Johansson vann St Petersburg hösten 2006. Och det blir samtidigt singeltitel nummer 266 inkasserad av en svensk spelare sedan tennisen blev öppen 1968.

Bra vecka - bittert slut, Robin
Det blev en ny finalförlust för Robin Söderling. Belgaren Steve Darcis blev för svår i Memphisfinalen och vann 6-3, 7-6. Robins segern över Andy Roddick i veckan imponerar dock och resultatet i sin helhet är väl godkänt. Jonas Björkmans semifinalplats glädjer också. Las Vegas blir nästa stopp för ATP-svenskarna.
Söderling kom inte riktigt upp i samma standard i finalen som i tidigare matcher i veckan tycker tränaren Peter Carlsson.


- Ett tidigt break i första var inte bra, det blev uppförsbacke sedan, säger han.

6-3 i första följdes av ett jämnare set som gick till tiebreak.


- Robin hade 5-3 och ett bra läge efter att ha fått in en förstaserve men missade. Det är små marginaler. Darcis servade själv mycket bra och får tillbaka mycket från bakplan. En bra vecka men surt just nu efteråt förstås. Finalen är kanske den värsta matchen att förlora å sätt och vis, säger Peter Carlsson.

Hur reagerar då Robins kropp på de två senaste veckornas tio matcher efter ett långt uppehåll? Sliten?


- Njaa, inte så farligt. Robin fick några öätta matcher här i inledningen så det är nog mest mentalt, menar coachen
